A Wisconsin woman named Tracy has filed a Benicar lawsuit against the parent companies of the popular blood pressure medication, Daiichi Sankyo and Forest Laboratories, claiming the drug caused severe gastrointestinal complications. Benicar (olmesartan medoxomil) is one of the most widely prescribed blood pressure medications accounting for $3.1 billion in sales worldwide in 2013.
Severe Side Effects of Benicar
The drug was prescribed to the woman in 2008 to control her hypertension. Her Benicar lawsuit alleges that serious side effects occurred including Sprue-like enteropathy, celiac-like villous atrophy/blunting/damage, nausea, vomiting, kidney failure, colitis, gastritis, and more resulting in permanent injuries.
Tracy claims that her side effects far exceeded what is indicated on the website of Benicar which include kidney problems, diarrhea and weight loss. These symptoms may develop months or years after starting Benicar, the website says.
Sprue-like enteropathy imitates Celiac disease. It produces symptoms that parallel those of CD, such as severe and chronic diarrhea as well as significant weight loss. In addition, villous atrophy adds to the problem. The intestinal walls are covered by miniscule tentacles called villi that absorb nutrients from food. These villi disappear from erosion making the intestinal walls smooth and unable to absorb necessary nutrients leading to deficiency of important vitamins and minerals.
In 2013 the FDA required Daiichi Sankyo to add a warning on Benicar regarding side effects that could include sprue-like enteropathy. The warnings were partly due to a study performed by the Mayo Clinic where test results indicated that none of the patients showing symptoms of Celiac disease actually had it. What they did have in common was that they were all using Benicar. Of the 22 patients studied, 14 had gastrointestinal complications requiring hospitalization. Once patients stopped the use of Benicar, the symptoms lessened and they were able to gain weight.
Benicar Multidistrict Litigation
Benicar lawsuits have taken a long time to materialize due to the fact that the symptoms may take years to become evident. Studies confirming the link between kidney problems, sprue-like enteropathy, severe diarrhea and malnutrition support many of the Benicar lawsuits. The lawsuit filed by Tracy will become part of the larger multidistrict litigation In Re: Benicar (olmesartan) Products Liability Litigation, MDL No. 2026 in the U.S. District Court for the district of New Jersey, Camden Vicinage.
